History of Grama Panchayat
Valayam Grama Panchayat has a rich history rooted in traditional agriculture, education, healthcare, and tribal culture. The region was once under the control of local Kovilakams, with farming mainly based on tenancy. From the 1940s, migration and improved agricultural practices encouraged the cultivation of coconut, pepper, rubber, tapioca, bananas, and other crops. The farmers’ movement of the 1950s brought significant changes to land cultivation. Education began through traditional Ezhutupallis and gradually developed into schools, including Valayam High School and Higher Secondary School. A Primary Health Centre was established in 1957, improving healthcare facilities.
